Wearing this has been something of a chore once you've made your way down to the itchy base, although the journey there is rather quite nice. In Tobacco Oud the tobacco dominates, in Oud Fleur I smell a fecal rose, and in Oud Wood, I'm distracted by dry and airy woods and spice. The perfumes share a dark, moody woodiness, an intensity of character, a lush and exotic richness and a hint of bitter grubbiness. But the oud note itself doesn't jump out at me or smell the same in each fragrance.

Perhaps the plethora of other ingredients, and the different focus for each of these oud fragrances actually obscures the oud note a little? Perhaps Tom Ford is trying to show a range of uses for this ingredient rather than aiming towards identifiability and homogeneity? Fragrance ingredients are not always mono-dimensional, particularly natural ingredients, but is real oud oil used in these fragrances? For the price, I would hope so, but I'm not sure that it is.

An exotic woody oriental fragrance which is distinctive, warm and tenacious. The fresh aromatic rosewood top notes lift the rich distinctive heart of warm cardamom spices and oud woods. In a short time, the blend exudes an essence of exotic rosewood followed by a smoky accord of oud wood, sandalwood and vetiver roots, which envelop me in pleasant warmth.

The vetiver emerges genuinely, and it remains prominent for the length of the perfume's development. There is no massive bite to the oud, and the oud here is different to others that I have smelled. Cardamom has become slightly more prominent now, with a heavier camphor tone. Its cool undertones balance the rosy notes that are often found in oud fragrances. And the combination of oud with the aromatic and nutty cardamom is terrific. The smokiness reminds me of the atmosphere of an ancient incense-filled temple during some spiritual function, where the walls, floor and roof soak in burnt olibanum oil veil.

It is a resinous woodiness with an interesting smell. This rich and warm blend of wood and spice notes pays homage to oud wood, a prized ingredient that perfumers the world-over are enthralled by. Wrap yourself in the aroma of exotic rosewood, cardamom, tonka bean, amber and the smoky blend of oud wood, sandalwood and vetiver when you're in the mood to indulge. It's a strong and bold fragrance without being too overpowering. It does lean more masculine but I still think it's unisex enough for a woman to wear. It has a lovely mix of vanilla, amber and sandalwood.

The oud in the scent is noticeable but on the softer side when mixed with the Tonka Bean and Vanilla. It wears very well on the skin and like most Tom Ford fragrances I've tried, lasts all day long without fading. I recommend reading the reviews on Fragrantica, Basenotes.net, Kafkaesque and Temptalia. Métallique is grossly underrated in the Tom Ford lineup, especially as a scent for men.

It blends floral notes with crisp bergamot, spicy pink peppercorn, and a strong, creamy vanilla-sandalwood base. I think that people expect all Tom Ford fragrances to scream and shout, whereas this one plays by the rules and earns perfect marks for it. There are faint traces of vanilla and tonka. The base is not a sweet and gourmand bomb, and the oud occasionally appears fleeting, but the ground is mostly just sandalwood and vetiver. Using that bit of amber is done masterfully, and if they used more, the bottom would become too sweet and powdery a deal.

I should add that I'm using Oud Wood for more than a year now to the point that I think it has become my signature scent(although I didn't believe in signature scents before). I find it the most versatile and easy to wear scent from the Private Blend collection . Also it's amazing for blending(my favorite is Arabian Wood+Oud Wood combination). It lasts long on my skin but its not too potent.

My favorite part is its dry down with creamy tonka bean and sandalwood. Ultimately, Oud Wood is intended to be a pleasant amber-based scent with a strong plonk of oud, surrounded by filler woods and spice to keep it in the semi-formal/semi-romantic zone. The Comet association with the dustiness of the stuff is unfortunate, but not a total deal breaker. However, the fairly weak projection and below-average longevity for an eau de parfum are, so I can't really recommend this. As an early American take on the wood once exclusive to the Middle East, it's decent enough, but really shouldn't be more than $50 for a 1.7oz/50ml bottle, and not somewhere near $200. What compounds this worse is the hype behind this particular Private Blend, along with Tobacco Vanille , as the two must-haves for men from the house.

I received a sample of this perfume along with an order I recently placed. You can't imagine my reaction when I saw it was none other than Tom Ford Oud Wood. Yes, because this perfume is on my wishlist, together with Faking Fabolous. I love potent aromas, everything related to the word "animal", understood as something that comes from the way of the fauna and the flora. Mineral, metallic, resinous, smoky, leathery, medicinal scents drive me crazy. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that ingredients such as leather, moist earth, rain, resins, petrichor, balsams, syrups, and amber are all my cup of tea.

By the way, about Oud Wood, this fragrance differs from most of the Arabian colognes, meaning it does not rely on the well-known formula of oud-rose or oud-saffron pairs. Instead, it is planned differently without too much sweetness. It doesn't smell like any other Oud out there, and I think that's why I love it.

Because it smells different, like I've never smelled any other perfume like this before. After smelling the two real oud oils, I can comment that none of the commercial fragrances that I smelt last week are particularly reminiscent of the real ouds. The two oils are so complex and rich and have distinct qualities about them that aren't reflected much in the perfumes. The Oud 27 and the Tom Ford range of Ouds probably come closest in "vibe" to how natural oud smells, without either of them smelling much like the real deal, although Oud 27 is animalic and woody. I'm not sure whether any of these fragrances uses real oud.

They might, or they might claim to, but I doubt we'll ever know for sure. Mark also sent a sample of ambroxan 10% in alcohol for me to sniff, as I was certain perfumers were using ambroxan regularly in oud fragrances. It's light and airy, subtle, and not very complex.

I agree that Oud Wood is pretty unisex, at least for women who are used to wearing unisex frags, particularly dry, woody ones. I have often read reviews by the guys on Basenotes asserting that scents I love to wear are absolutely extremely masculine. Following in their footsteps is the faintly medicinal tones of oud. There is no huge bite to the oud, and I don't think it's mutedness is due to the fact that it is covered by a veil of spice and sweetness. Even putting aside the unique nature of Montale's fragrances, the oud here is different to others that I have smelled. For example, the By Kilian oud fragrances in the Arabian Nights collection range from cold, stony oud in Pure Oud to almost no oud at all in Amber Oud.

I've read that there are many kinds of oud, and that they can smell quite different to one another. That is, until I smelt Nirvana by Evocative Perfumes. Every time I've worn this I CANNOT stop smelling my wrist, and it has great sillage and longevity is 6+ hours from one spray.

Oud is my favorite note and it is definitely prominent in this, but in a very friendly, NOT HARSH way. I can smell the rosewood and vetiver, but the vetiver is also not as masculine as I'm used to, and that's a good thing. This is a soft unisex fragrance that wears well on either gender. Nothing sharp, harsh, or headache-inducing here, just a very well-blended gorgeous scent. Extremely softly for a Tom Ford fragrance, if I might add. It may be the softest opening I've ever experienced for one of his perfumes — Private Blend or regular collection!

The very first impression is of rose and sweet, nutty cardamom. There is also Szechuan pepper, earthy vetiver, and hints of rich vanilla as if from a freshly cut Madagascar bean. Oud wood is a perfect introductory oud scent, with a perfect blend of woods that helps round everything out.

Definitely worth the price if you can buy at around $100 or so. It is a light, subtle, masculine fragrance that I thoroughly enjoy, but wouldn't purchase at retail. Oud Wood is the ultimate perfume for anyone who doesn't like a scent that feels too precious or contrived. It features an expert strategy of foresty-scented woods that smell classic and comforting yet rare and enticing. According to Ford, Oud Wood envelops the wearer in rare oud, exotic spices, and cardamom, before unfolding into a rich blend of smells that are rich, dark, and sensual all at once. About two hours in, the vetiver starts to truly emerge and it remains prominent for the length of the perfume's development.

Oud Wood is now primarily a vetiver, cardamom and oud fragrance with the rose becoming increasingly fainter. At the three-hour mark, sandalwood makes its appearance, pushing the rose completely off the stage and blending with the vanilla, cardamom and the earthy vetiver in a truly lovely manner. At times, it seems as though Oud Wood is mainly a vanilla vetiver with hints of oud and spice.

At other times, it's mostly sandalwood with vetiver. The perfume fluctuates and undulates, showing just how well-blended it is. Oud Wood is lovely and infinitely easy to wear, especially by the standards of many other agarwood fragrances in the market today. The reason is that — at the end of the day — Oud Wood is not a very oud fragrance at all.

This is no nuclear Montale — a niche perfume house that has around 27 oud fragrances, all of which radiate post-apocalyptic intensity. And it's not M7 either, a much sweeter, more potent, hard-core treatment of the subject. Though I've only tried the reformulated version of M7, I have to admit, I far preferred it to Tom Ford's second foray into agarwood. This starts off with a spicy cardamom and rosewood up top and slowly dries down to a creamy sandalwood, tonka and very tame and wearable oud. This is an all round signature scent worthy fragrance. Although I really love this fragrance and it is currently my favorite in my whole collection I also have to cover some negative aspects to it, that as a buyer you should be aware of .

This fragrance's big problem is performance. I get really bad projection with this and feel like the scent is very close to my skin. Also longevity is rather disappointing, after two hours I can hardly smell it anymore although I apply 4+ sprays (I usually only apply 2-3). Maybe you can compensate by spraying more but with that price I am absolutely not willing to do so and 4 sprays is a lot for me already. Combine that with the sweet notes of vanilla and tonka bean and you have what Oud Wood by Tom Ford smells like.
